Fishing Skill

Fishing can be both a relaxing and a profitable hobby. The main equipment you need is a fishing pole and a ship, though having something to defend yourself with against the creatures roaming the seas will help you too.

There are 2 basic types of fishing: shore fishing and deep sea fishing. Fishing along the shore can get you fish to cook, eat or sell, but not much more than that. The treasures of the sea are usually found in deep water.

Here is what you can catch:
Fish: you can sell it, cut it up and cook it, or feed it to your animals.

Old shoes: you can wear someone's old shoes, sell them, or throw them away.

Big fish: rather than eating a big fish you can keep it as a decoration.

Magical fish: a small fish that, when eaten, gives a magical effect for a short time.

While fishing you can also wake up creatures far too big to be caught, and on those you can find loot such as:

Special fishing net: this net can be used in deep water and catches "special" creatures. Those creatures sometimes carry interesting items.

Treasure Map: ordinary treasure maps that you can complete.

Message in a bottle: each bottle contains a message that leads you to a shipwreck. Shipwrecks typically hold various decorative treasures. Some bottles contain an ancient SOS, which gives you a chance at a fabled fishing net. A fabled fishing net is similar to a special fishing net, but it has a chance to give you valuable loot.

White pearls: used in crafting magical equipment, white pearls can be obtained directly while fishing and are sometimes found in the loot of sea serpents.

Training the Fishing skill is relatively easy; just keep fishing until your skill hits 100. A given area only holds a limited amount of fish, so you will need to fish in different places.

Running a ship: a fisherman should learn how to run a ship. Buy a ship deed from a shipwright or a provisioner. All ships are basically the same; bigger ships give you more room to walk around, but they are harder to maneuver in tight spaces.

Use the ship deed at the water's edge to launch the ship. Once the ship is in the water, a ship key will appear in your backpack. Insure that key right away! Most ship owners have lost their key because they forgot to insure it. If something goes wrong, a copy of that key is also kept in your bank. Let us hope you never need it, but insure that key too if you do.

With the ship in the water, click the key and target the side of your ship to unlock it. Then double click the side of your ship to open the gangplank and double click that plank to board.

The ship's tillerman listens to the spoken commands of the players around it. (That can be a problem if you have enemies on your ship!) Use these commands to control your ship:

Movement commands: forward, back/backward, left, right

Movement commands can also be modified like this: slow , one

Turning commands: turn right, turn left, come about/turn around

You can also steer the ship manually. Double click the tiller to take control, then use your mouse as if you were walking; this moves the ship as though you were moving yourself. Ships have 2 speeds, walking or running pace with your mouse. To let go of the tiller, double click yourself or the tiller.

An unattended ship will decay over time and sink. If you do not want to lose your ship, you can refresh it by visiting it and double clicking the gangplank. Even so, the easiest way to store your ship is to drydock (shrink) it. Pull your ship up to land and step off. Single click the tiller/tillerman and pick the drydock option. This shrinks your ship, and it is the best way to store the ship while it is not in use.
