Magery Skill

With its 64 different spells, Magery is the single most powerful skill in the game. Most players pick Magery as the foundation of their character. Higher Magery increases the number of spells you can cast, your spell damage, and the effect of things like poison and paralyze.

If you are committed to playing a Paladin, you may want to train Magery only up to 69.9. While your Magery is below 70, your faster casting cap for Chivalry spells is 4. Once your Magery reaches 70 or more, chivalry faster casting is capped at 2 instead. If you are not using faster casting with Chivalry, this is nothing to worry about.

The support skills for Magery are Evaluating Intelligence and Inscription. Both affect the power of almost every damage spell. Your Evaluating Intelligence rises while you train Magery and Magic Resistance.

To cast Magery spells you generally need two things: a magery spellbook containing the spells, and the reagents the spells require. If your spellbook does not contain the spell you want, find the spell scroll and drop it onto the book to add it. Most players carry a full spellbook at all times. A full spellbook holds 64 spells and can be bought from players or player vendors. Spellbooks can also be crafted with the Inscription skill.

Spells can also be cast straight from spell scrolls instead of a spellbook. Casting from a scroll costs no reagents, because they were already used to make the scroll. The scroll is consumed when you cast it. One advantage of scrolls is that they need less skill: casting from a scroll lowers the spell circle by two, so an 8th circle spell like energy vortex is cast as easily as a 6th circle spell, which is handy if your Magery is not high.

Magery players always wear jewellery with "faster casting" and "faster cast recovery" (fc and fcr). With a total of 4 fc and 8 fcr you can chain spells quickly. That turns Magery into a weapon that is hard to beat, especially in PvP.

Remember that if you have 100 Inscription, you should cast magic reflection and reactive armor to gain a +5 bonus to every resist.

While training Magery it is quite popular to wear lower reagent cost armour so you spend fewer reagents, although it is not a requirement. It also helps to use the Necromancy spells lich form and summon familiar for extra mana, along with lower mana cost armour. Jewellery with fc and fcr helps as well.

The most important gear for training Magery is a weapon with "mage weapon" and spell channeling. When you wield such a weapon, your effective Magery drops. That may sound bad at first, but it is incredibly useful for training. If your weapon is "mage weapon -25" and you have 30 Magery, your effective Magery becomes 5. At 5 skill you can train by casting 2nd circle spells, whereas at 30 skill you would have to use 3rd or 4th circle spells. 2nd circle spells cast faster and use less mana, so your training speeds up considerably. Once you reach 75 while training with this weapon, take it off and your skill will be 100.

To train Magery, cast spells you have a low chance of succeeding with. When a cast fails you spend no mana or reagents, but you still have a chance at a skill gain. Every spell in a given circle has the same failure chance, so which one you pick depends on your method. If you are not using lower reagent cost armour, you will want to cast the spells with the cheapest reagents. If you are training Healing at the same time, you will want to cast spells that damage you so you can apply bandages to yourself.
