On top of the basic bard abilities reached from the skill menu, bard players can use spellsongs to help their own party or to harm the enemy.
Beneficial spellsongs affect every party member and their animals who are in range when the song starts and who stay in range for its duration. Harmful spellsongs affect a single chosen target within range. Spellsongs require the use of a musical instrument. The instrument is used once when the song begins and must stay in your backpack for the duration of the song. Slayer instruments can increase the effect of harmful spellsongs, but reduce it when used against creatures of another group. Exceptional instruments provide no extra benefit.
To play a spellsong you need to own the
Book of Bard Masteries. This book can be obtained from the bard NPCs upon completing a quest. The Book of Bard Masteries holds 3 bard masteries corresponding to the 3 bard skills. You can only follow one mastery path at a time, and can only use the spellsongs belonging to that mastery. Your skill level must be at least 90 to use the masteries.
No reagents are needed to cast spellsong spells. Even so, they consume a noticeable amount of mana: on top of the initial mana cost of casting, mana keeps draining every 2 seconds to keep the spellsong going. This drain also depends on the number of creatures affected by the spellsong.
Spellsong spells are not affected by faster casting equipment. A bard can only have one spellsong active at a time. A player or creature can be under the effect of several spellsongs at once, but never more than one of the same type of spellsong. The effect of each song depends on the skill level of the bard in that mastery. The effect of harmful spellsongs can be reduced with the magic resistance skill.
Spellsong spells are harmful or beneficial just like other spells, so be careful when using them. Using a discordance spellsong on an innocent counts as a criminal act, and so does using a beneficial spellsong when there is a criminal or a murderer in your party. You will not get a warning message before using them.
