Gumshoe Quest

In this document you will find a detailed walkthrough of the Gumshoe Quest series. It is not a "kill Y of creature X" kind of quest. If you enjoy a story, I am sure you will not find it boring. As for the reward: Publish 101 brought a lot of changes to the Lost Lands dungeon Khaldun. One of them is that the creatures you kill inside Khaldun drop artifact items much like the Blackthorn Invasion, and the other is the newly added Khal Ankhur champion. As with every champion it drops 6 powerscrolls, and since the champion is inside Khaldun you also have a chance at the Khaldun artifacts while you grind the champion spawn.

Just like in the Blackthorn dungeon in Britain, the Khaldun artifacts you collect can be traded with the NPC at the entrance of the Khaldun dungeon for new items.

Now to the quest:

First, the skills the quest calls for;
even at 0 skill there is no way to fail any step of the quest. In other words, you can take the quest with any character regardless of skills.

First we double-click any Town Cryer NPC. The "News" tab should be open in the list that comes up. From that list we click the entry marked in red in the picture, "Royal Britannian Guard Detective Branch Gets new HQ, Inspector Jasper named as Chief".

In the new window that opens we click the Quest option. We accept the quest by clicking accept on the Quest Offer Going Gumshoe window.

The quest says we need to talk to Inspector Jasper. You can find Inspector Jasper in the building right next to the Britain East Bank. A message appears on screen as soon as you enter the room. We double-click Inspector Jasper and accept the quest window that opens.

Next we find the NPC called Mortimer in the Britain graveyard and double-click him

When you click the gravestone standing just to Mortimer's left, you notice something odd. Using the Forensic Evaluation skill on the gravestone, we learn that Thomas Vilyum was born in Vesper, lived in Moonglow, worked in Yew and died in Britain.

We go inside the building right across from the gravestone. (there are bloody footprints at the door) Here, as shown in the picture, we use the Detect Hidden skill on the stone next to the tables.

Then we reveal the hidden door with the Forensic Evaluation skill.

When you double-click this hidden door it tells you it is protected by a password and that you must enter it to get in. After double-clicking the door, type "Boreas" and press enter.

In the room we enter you will see a blue book, as in the picture. Use your Forensic Evaluation skill on this book. Since the book is written in a coded language, use the Inscription skill on the book again to take a copy of what it says. A small parchment will appear in your backpack. If you look around the room a bit you will see a white dust, as in the picture; use the Forensic Evaluation skill on it. We are done here, and now we will visit the graveyards of the cities named on the gravestone one by one. To make it easy to follow along you can use the same order as this write-up, but that is not a requirement; you can visit the graveyards in any order you like.

In the Vesper graveyard we double-click the gravestone standing in front of the character in the picture.

1589892926857.png

Just as we did in the Britain graveyard, we use the Forensic Evaluation skill on the stone.

Inside the room you see in the picture, use the Detect Hidden skill and then the Forensic Evaluation skill on the floor tile next to the coffin.

Double-click the hidden door that appears and open it with the password "Moriens". As in Britain, use Forensic Evaluation on the book first and then Inscription to take a copy. (you get one parchment for each place you do this.) Do not forget to use the Forensic Evaluation skill on the dust pile.

When you get to the Yew graveyard, repeat the same steps for the stone and hidden passage in the picture. Activate the hidden passage with "Tenebrae".

For the Moonglow graveyard, activate the gravestone and hidden passage in the picture just like the previous ones and enter the hidden room with the password "Carthax".

Again, take a copy of the book and use Forensic Evaluation on the dust pile.

If you have not missed or mistaken anything, you should end up with 4 parchments in your backpack. We go and share what we have found with Inspector Jasper, but the man we call an Inspector turns out to be useless: he cannot read the coded writing and sends us to Jafar in the Moonglow library.

We use the teleporter marked in the picture to get to the Moonglow library.
This is the most annoying part of the quest, because the spot is random, so I cannot tell you to click here or press there. But if you are lucky you will not lose much time. When you get to the library, walk through the rooms with bookcases one by one and keep an eye on the bottom left of your screen. As in the picture it will say "Your keen senses detect the books in library have been recently disturbed...*". When you see that message it means the random bookcase is in that room, and it is usually a bookcase near where the message appeared.

1589893095279.png 1589893114289.png
What we have to do is use the "Detect Hidden" skill on the bookcases, starting with the one nearest to where we saw the message, until we find the right one. When you find the right bookcase you will get the message "*You find the cipher text hidden among the books' Return to the Cryptologist to tell him where it is'*", as in the picture. Once you see it, go to Jafar and double-click him. That finishes our business with Jafar.

We head back to Inspector Jasper, where the quest began. But Jasper is not done asking for things. He wants us to go to Papua. We accept the quest and head to the Moonglow teleporters.

1589893140066.png
Using the teleporter marked in the picture we go to the building with the Papua teleporter. Stand in the middle of the pentagram as shown and type "recdu"; it will send you to the Papua mage shop.

1589893168593.png

Leave the building and head SE, as the arrow in the picture shows, until you see the harbour. Go inside the marked building and head down to the lower floor, where you will see a ghost. Walk up to it and use the Spirit Speaking skill.

1589893206539.png 1589893235619.png

To get back, stand on the pentagram in the Papua mage shop and this time type "recsu". Then go to Britain, and when you talk to Inspector Jasper he will reward you with a blue gorget and a Gumshoe title deed. Wearing the gorget is all you need to get past the guards at the door of the Khaldun dungeon. You can take it off once you are past them.
