Halloween Event
In ancient Wales it was believed that October 31st, the day we now know as Halloween, opened a link between the worlds of the dead and the living. The dead were held to be malevolent and dangerous, and were blamed for troubles, sickness and poor harvests. Bonfires were lit during the festival, and the bones of the animals slaughtered for the winter months were usually burned in them. Costumes and masks were worn to imitate the evil spirits.
According to the belief, the bodiless souls of the people who had died that year came back on the night of October 31st looking for a new body. Since nobody wanted to lose their body to those souls, the villagers arranged and decorated their homes that night so as to frighten the spirits away. They put candles outside and dressed up as ghosts or terrifying creatures to scare the souls off. In later ages, as the belief in wandering spirits faded, dressing up for Halloween turned into a kind of traditional celebration and entertainment.
Another similar legend says that on the night of October 31st the spirits that came down to earth took human shape and went door to door asking for food and drink. The spirits treated the householders who agreed to feed them well for the rest of the year, and pestered those who refused. Over time this belief turned into the custom of children dressing up on the night of October 31st, going house to house and asking for sweets with the words "trick or treat". Houses that give out sweets are thanked, and the houses that do not get pelted with eggs.
Halloween first came to the Ultima Online world with OSI in 2006, then found its way onto other private servers, and is celebrated every year with various events running through October and November.
On our server, which follows OSI as faithfully as possible, this year's Halloween event is now open to you, our players.
Trick or Treat
The "Trick or Treat" event lets you decorate your houses on the server with some very nice decorations. The single most important requirement for earning rewards in this event is having 100 Begging. With a character that has the skill, type "Trick or Treat" and click any vendor on Sosaria whose name shows in yellow, and they will hand you candy or, with a certain chance, house decoration items. If your Begging is below 100 you have no chance at the deco items and will have to settle for candy.
