New Player Guide - Training
When you start playing on Ultimate World, your skills and stats are still undeveloped. The first thing you will set out to do is train your skills. You can take the skills you have chosen to 100, or you can kill champion creatures to get Power Scrolls and raise a skill to 120. You can also grind levels: for every level you gain you earn 1 point, and 1 point is worth +1 skill. That way you can push a skill that is at 100 all the way up to 120.
While you work on your progress, you should make sure all of your stats are set to rise. Click Status on your Paperdoll to open your character status window. The arrows next to the strength, dexterity and intelligence stat icons should be pointing up. If they are not, click them until they do point up. Later on you may want to change this, once you hit the 225 total cap and want to focus on a specific stat. But for now it is best to raise all of them as quickly as you can.
What the stats do:
NOTE: Do not worry too much about raising your stats; they will go up on their own as you train your skills.
Now for the key question. How do you train your skills?
In Ultima Online, skills improve as you use them - for example, hit something with a club and your macefighting skill automatically starts to rise. Our server has a training area where players can train their skills:
Note: When you first create your character you spawn in the training area, and once you leave the area you cannot get back in.
Weapon skills are the easiest ones to raise. Every time you swing a weapon you have a chance to gain skill. That is why you will want to use the fastest weapon you can find. A dagger for Fencing, a katana for Swordsmanship, a tessen or a club for macefighting, a repeating crossbow for Archery.
Support skills matter a great deal. You can train Healing by applying bandages; you can use the bandage command by typing "[band". You can also heal yourself using the Spirit Speak skill. To use this skill, click the Skills button on your Paperdoll to open the skill list. Find spirit speak in the list and press the blue button next to it to use it. You will find it handier to drag the skill out of the list onto your screen. Instead of opening the list every time, you get a useful button that works on a double-click.
What about the skills that have nothing to do with combat? There is plenty to do in the game besides fighting.
Spellcasting: Double-click one of your spellbooks, turn the pages to find the spell and double-click the spell. Your skill starts to rise when you try to cast spells close to your skill level. The spell you cast should be neither too easy nor too hard for your casting skill level. To cast Magery and Necromancy spells you need the required reagents. To cast Chivalry spells you first have to tithe gold. You can do that by clicking on an ankh. You will also need the spellbooks that suit you: even though NPC vendors sell all the books, Necromancy and Magery spellbooks come empty. Find or buy spell scrolls and drop them onto the book. You only have to do this once for each spell.
Crafting: Players who dedicate themselves to crafting can make the best equipment around. To learn a craft you need the right tool, plus the materials and raw resources needed to make the item. For example, to become a tailor, get a sewing kit and some cloth. Double-click the sewing kit to open the tailoring menu; the menu explains what each item requires. As with other skills, you gain skill by making things you have a chance of succeeding at. Success is never guaranteed. Save up money by making the things you need with few raw materials.
Harvest: Gathering the materials you need for yourself is useful, and selling those materials to other players is quite profitable. Harvesting is usually a matter of using a tool. For example, to mine ore, double-click your pickaxe or shovel and target the mountain or rock you want to dig. If you manage to mine some iron ore, take it to a forge, double-click the ore and then target the forge to smelt the iron.
Animal training: Many players have some level of animal taming. Tamed animals are used in combat, and some rare animals can be sold to other players for gold. To tame an animal, find the animal taming skill in the skill list and click the button. Then target the animal you want to tame.
Barding: Bard skills are used very often in PVM (player vs monster) situations and can be quite effective. They are activated much like other skills. Find the skill you want in the skill list, Peacemaking for instance, and click the button. Then target the animal.
If you have the money, you can pay NPC vendors to teach you skills. For example, go to a tinker, single-click them and choose "Train Tinkering". In the same way, if you find the right trainer NPCs you can raise your skills from 0 up to 25 or 30.

What the stats do:
- Strength: Determines how much weight you can carry and how many hit points you have, and affects how much damage you do in armed combat. There are some weapons and armour that require high strength to equip on your character.
- Dexterity: Indirectly determines your swing speed. Swing speed depends on your stamina, and having high dexterity gives you high stamina. Dexterity also determines your bandage speed. With high dexterity you apply bandages faster. Finally, dexterity affects your ability to parry. If your dexterity is below 80, parrying an incoming attack becomes very hard.
- Intelligence: Determines your mana pool. High intelligence raises your maximum mana. Intelligence also affects your mana regeneration rate and how much damage you do in spell-based combat.
- The area holds training creatures, 10 that deal damage and 10 that deal none. You can use these creatures to train your combat, defence and healing skills.
- You can train Animal Taming, Discordance and Provocation.
- There are locked chests for training the Lockpicking skill.
- And many more things than we can list here.
Note: When you first create your character you spawn in the training area, and once you leave the area you cannot get back in.
