Stealth Skill

With the addition of the Ninjitsu skill, Stealth has become quite a bit more useful. Stealth is basically the ability to walk (not run) while hidden. To use Stealth you first have to be hidden somehow, either with the Hiding skill or with a smoke bomb or the like. Once hidden, take a step, but do not run, and you will start walking while hidden. Your Hiding skill must be at least 30.

The chance of a successful stealth step depends on several factors. First of all, on your skill level; the lower your skill, the lower your chance to stealth.

Second, it depends on the armor you wear; the less you wear, the better. If you are wearing a full suit of iron armor you probably will not be able to stealth at all. Mage armor is fine, leather armor is better, but the best of all is wearing nothing. A higher skill level potentially lets you wear more armor while stealthing.

The third factor is the people around you. Even if nobody is using the Detecting Hidden skill, you can still be spotted while walking in stealth; every step you take can passively reveal you. If someone has a high Detecting Hidden skill, their chance of passively noticing you is high. Being closer to people, and being around more people, raises the chance of being noticed.

Once you have a high Stealth skill, there is a lot you can do:

Ninjitsu abilities: most Ninjitsu abilities require you to be in stealth mode before using them. These are Backstab, Surprise Attack and Shadow Jump.

Shadow Strike: this weapon ability is useful defensively because it hides you when your weapon lands a hit, but it cannot be performed without a high Stealth skill.

To train Stealth, take off all of your armor, hide yourself somehow, then use the Stealth skill from your skill list. In normal use you do not need to activate the skill manually, but while training you will want to activate it to make it harder on yourself, so your skill rises faster.

If you managed to stay hidden successfully, wait 10 seconds and activate Stealth again. If you failed and became visible, hide yourself again and start over.

As your skill level rises you will need to wear more armor to keep gaining. Start by adding leather armor, then studded leather, and then metal armor.
